"How? There are no others. The Amasiti are gone. I'm the last."

"Fewa was not the only one who planted seeds. Only mine took many years to be ready for harvest. Find them and claim your place."

Before Ameenah could ask how, Aferi was gone. Startled, Ameenah turned around to find the music, the hundreds of women dancing, and the desert itself replaced by a great wave barreling towards her. Though the ground beneath her shuddered, she could not move. She could not run. Heart pounding, Ameenah had time to take one breath before she was swept away.

She tumbled, flailing as she searched for something to keep herself from sinking deeper into the dark blue water. With nothing to hold onto, her body sank past the turmoil of the waves in to an ocean of stillness. Exhausted, Ameenah had no choice but to release the tension in her body. With no air and no sense of direction, Ameenah's heart clenched knowing death was only a few seconds away.

Her eyes nearly closed in surrender until a flicker of blue-green light pierced through the darkness. Another light appeared, and then another. Helplessly, she floated towards the lights until something rough and thin wrapped around her ankles. Alarmed, Ameenah turned and grabbed her leg. Crouched in tree branches were children staring up at her with eyes that were opal, turquoise, sapphire blue, and ocean green.

Children, she thought. How did they get here?

She wanted to ask them, but there was no more air, nothing more she could do but reach for them. Like a school of fish, they darted out as one. Out in the open water, Ameenah saw her mistake at once.

They were not children at all.

While their faces were angelic, their bodies were made of scales and fins that shimmered and muscles that were taught and powerful. They moved like sharks towards her, surrounding her in a circle from which she would never escape. The tentacles at her ankles wound their way up her body until they cut off the last traces of air in her lungs. As terror overtook her, Ameenah opened her mouth and screamed. The swell of brine burned in her lungs as the eyes of the sea creatures faded back into darkness.
